Enjoy the variety of meadows, tussock flats, wetlands, and an impressive array of alpine plants. Walk this track in either direction from Glenorchy or from the Te Anau end on Milford Road.

Highlights

  • Bird watchers can feast their eyes on tītitipounamu/tiny rifleman, mohua/rare yellowhead, whio/blue duck, goose-like paradise shelducks and cheeky kea, to name just a few
  • History buffs will love the old forge and blacksmiths camp. From here, a short track leads to the site which supported construction of the early bridle track
  • Take a side trip to Key Summit, which leads you above the bush line to an alpine wetland and with magnificent views of the Darran Mountains and the Hollyford Valley. Allow and extra 1.5 hours for the return trip
